Scottish folk music icon Archie Fisher will perform two house concerts, Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 16-17.
Due to the size of our venue and the popularity of this well known performer, Gardeners Green Folk Club in Merville will be hosting concerts on two consecutive evenings.
A master guitarist and beloved worldwide for his songs, Fisher is Scotland’s foremost troubadour, with a career spanning four decades. Fisher was born in Glasgow into a large singing family, which yielded three professional singers, Archie and his sisters Ray and Cilla Fisher.
His father’s appreciation of many musical styles proved to be a heavy influence on Fisher’s music, while his mother, a native Gaelic speaker from the Outer Hebredes, influenced the lyrical quality of his singing and songwriting.
He is well known as the host of BBC Radio Scotland’s award winning “Travelling Folk” programme, which he presented for 25 years. Fisher came out of the British folk revival of the 1960s. He performed and recorded with Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy for many years, produced the Silly Wizard albums, and toured North America with Bert Jansch and John Renbourn. He formed a long-standing musical alliance with Garnet Rogers.
In 2006 he was awarded the MBE, bestowed by Queen Elizabeth, for services to traditional music. In 2007, he was inducted into the Scots Traditional Music Hall of Fame.
Despite being 77, Fisher continues to tour internationally, both as a solo artist and with Garnet Rogers. He has just released his first album in seven years, A Silent Song, followed by a tour of select North American gigs, and luckily for us, Gardeners Green in Merville is one of them.
