There is magic on the land, in the night, at Caravan Farm Theatre.

Travellers embark on a voyage through time and space – 18 years and several stops – to learn the story of Suki, a child of the moon and gift to a childless couple.

The Gift Horse is a charming tale reminiscent of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in that we’re reminded to give thanks for the blessings we receive, valuing them without always wanting more.

Based on an old Japanese folk tale, Rina and Jun are a poor couple unable to have their own children.

On Christmas Eve they are given the devastating news that their application to adopt a child has been turned down because of their poverty.

Stark in their sorrow, the couple is surprised by the arrival of the moon through their kitchen window. Rina is quick to accept the moon’s offer of one of her children, a baby girl – even on the condition that she must be returned to the moon in 18 years.

Already sensing the loss and fearful of attachment, her husband tries unsuccessfully to persuade Rina to hand the child back to the moon immediately.

She refuses and the audience follows the joy and drama of the family’s life. Moving through the night on horse-drawn wagons (sleighs if there is sufficient snow) from scene to scene adds to the mystery and magic.

It is the classic Christmas tale of love and redemption, of learning that opening our hearts to love is the source of true joy.

The hour-long trip is enchanting – but cold. Dress warmly, take a blanket and prepare to huddle with your fellow sleigh-mates.
