Films from Canada and around the world took home awards at the 15th annual Vancouver Island Short Film Festival, held at VIU on Feb. 7 and 8.
Danish filmmaker August Niclasen was the big winner, as his film Deepness of the Fry picked up three Goldie Awards for Best Technical, Best Editing and Best Animation.
Iran’s Javad Korsha also had a successful showing, earning Best Film and Best Writing honours for Mandatory.
Closer to home, the award for Best Music went to The Girl/La Fille by Vancouver filmmaker Keegan Connor Tracy and the Best Performance Award was bestowed upon Farrah Hart in Laura, by Abbotsford’s Kaayla Whachell. Calgary’s Ryan Irving rounded out the Canadian winners with the Program 1 People’s Choice Award for his film, Bark.
The Program 2 People’s Choice Award went to Sonatina by Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Hoi.
A special Film Paragon Goldie Award was also presented to retired VIU English professor Ron Bonham for his “many years of service to Nanaimo’s film community,” noted a VISFF press release.
This year’s panel of judges included award-winning Vancouver film, television and theatre producer Paul Armstrong, Vancouver Island-based film and television producer and director Terence Fitzgerald, web series director Meaghan Stringer, screen actor Helena Marie and actor and VIU theatre professor Leon Potter.
