Forever fifties, Forever Plaid

Off-Broadway musical lands in Fraser Valley

Stop me if you’ve heard this one – a quartet of male singers on their way to their debut concert meets an abrupt journey’s end and a trip to the afterlife.

While the premise can sound heavy to some, Forever Plaid is a lighthearted trip down Memory Lane, featuring classic barbershop quartet harmonies and popular tunes from the 1950s and 1960s. Presented by First Impressions Theatre, the popular off-Broadway musical is on its way to the Chilliwack Cultural Centre on Saturday, Feb. 22.

The plot features high school pals Sparky, Jinx, Smudge and Francis – the Plaids, a talented up and coming barbershop-style quartet. On their way to their very first show, their car crashes into a bus full of Catholic schoolgirls on their way to see the Beatles in their American debut on The Ed Sullivan Show.

The quartet wakes up to find themselves in Limbo, being allowed to return to earth for their first and last concert and – with any luck – win a place in Heaven. In addition to being no longer alive, they must also overcome asthma, ulcers, nerves and forgotten lyrics to work their way through the big show.
