Fork Off, an animal advocacy art show, is coming to the Ladysmith Waterfront Gallery.
The show is sponsored by the Gabriola Island Vegeteers, a group dedicated to plant based living. Seven of the nine artists are from Gabriola, with one from Nanaimo, and one from Toronto. All of the artists are either vegan or vegetarian, and all of them are women.
“We came up with the idea to come up with an art event that would be an advocacy event,” artist and show organizer, Sheila Norgate said. “I invited these specific artists. Turns out they’re all women — I would have loved to have found a vegan or vegetarian male artist, but I honestly couldn’t.”
Fork Off was presented last year on Gabriola Island. This year, they wanted to take the show off Gabriola, and chose the Waterfront Gallery because of it’s central location. Norgate also lauded the reputation of the gallery and staff.
“The Ladysmith art gallery is a wonderful venue,” Norgate said. “They’re terrific there, what can I say? They’re a pleasure to work with. We thought it’d be a really great venue, and accessible for a lot of people to get to. We want this to have wide exposure.”
Fork Off will be showing from June 23 to June 30, 11am – 4 pm. The opening reception is June 22, 1 – 4 pm, there will be refreshments and food provided by Plantitude restaraunt. Norgate will be giving a talk about the show on June 29 at 2 pm. Work presented in the show will be for sale.
