The Fort Gallery is hosting an ‘Arty Party’ on Nov. 3 as the gallery’s primary fundraising event.
Proceeds from the ticket sales go to help support the Fort Gallery’s artist activities throughout the year.
Fort Gallery artist, Edith Krause said the money raised also goes towards running the gallery.
“It’s an artist run gallery. The mandate of the gallery is to provide a venue for contemporary art. It’s not a commercial gallery. Occasionally we sell things, but that’s not our primary objective.”
The Arty Party features a live jazz performance by the Lava Lights, dancing, an appetizer and dessert buffet, arty adventures and a silent auction of original art.
Krause said the Fort Gallery is important to Langley because the community lacks an established art centre.
“Langley really doesn’t have much. We don’t really have an arts centre.”
At the Fort Gallery, Krause said contemporary artists are given the space to initiate ‘conversation’ about their artwork.
“The thing that sets contemporary art apart from decorative art is that the objective is to get conversations going about something. To raise issues, to get people to see something in a new way, to think about things in a new way,” said Krause.
Krause said her favourite aspect of contemporary art is that it ‘engages people in conversation.’
“The great thing about art is that because it’s not words, it tends to be much more open-ended so there’s a lot more left to the viewer in terms of interpretation and they might see things in a new light. Sometimes those conversations that come out of hearing other peoples’ perspective can be very enlightening and broaden our perspective.”
The Arty Party is on Nov. 3 at the Fort Langley Community Hall on 9167 Glover Road and runs from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased for $40 in-person at the gallery, at the door, or online at www.fortgallery.ca/events.html.
