Surrey teens no longer have to run away to join the circus.
Circus-act instruction is coming to Surrey Arts Centre in the form of Cirque Surrey, for ages 12 to 19.
Enrollment is free, thanks to sponsorship by Envision Financial.
Starting Jan. 10, the 90-minute sessions will happen on eight Tuesday evenings, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Studio Theatre.
Instructor Mike Battie (pictured) will teach circus skills including character development, costume design and roving performance. Other circus skills introduced will be juggling, stilt-walking, diabolo, devil sticks, plate spinning and more. All experience levels are welcome.
“We encourage people to register by Jan. 3 as that’s when we’ll need to have reached minimum registration,” Angela Cachay, publicist for Surrey Civic Theatres, told the Now.
Surrey Civic Theatres began offering Cirque Surrey as a class at Surrey Arts Centre last year.
A video made during last year’s sessions is posted below.
