Exquisite renditions of Valentine’s Day love songs from Portugal, Brazil and North America will take on a decidedly Latin flavour when Sara Marreiros performs Feb. 14 in the Music on Sunday concert series at The Old School House Arts Centre.
Marreiros, a Canadian/Portuguese jazz vocalist, will be backed by pianist Ron Hadley and bassist Ken Lister.
Growing up between Sagres, Portugal, and Victoria, Marreiros was brought up in many traditions as she travelled through Europe and North America.
At age 18 she moved to New York City, where she lived for a year in total immersion in the Jazz scene. Her adventures continued to Portugal and then throughout the US and Canada, where Sara performed, collaborated, and recorded alongside musicians with influences of hip-hop, jazz, world beat, electronic and folk. Working and rubbing shoulders with many notable names at venues such as the Vancouver Folk Festival, as well as recording live CBC studio sessions across Canada, Sara collected insights that informed and established her colourful perspective.
Her debut album was Alma De Terra, released in 2002, followed by Minha Luz in 2005. Her most recent gem is Something sweet on the Wind, released in August, 2012.
“..Sara Marreiros’ music is an epiphany-inducing, transcendent gift to be enjoyed in concert and on record,” Joseph Blake wrote in The Times Columnist of Victoria.
In the past 15 years, another venture of Sara’s has been in the fields of vocal improvisation and sound healing. Passion for this work was unveiled by Rhiannon, a master teacher whose musical vision resonates deeply with her spirit, and Sara has been working extensively with a troop in Vancouver and in Victoria B.C. Soulful collaborations provide unique concerts, cabaret-styled events and spontaneous performances.
Sunday’s concert begins at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $16 per person; for advance tickets visit The Old School House Arts Centre at 122 Fern Rd. West in Qualicum Beach, call 250-752-6133 or visit www.theoldschoolhouse.org.
