Reconciliation hits stage, screens with touring production
What does reconciliation really mean?
That’s what Theatre for Living asks with its powerful performance Home.
The live theatre production debuted in Vancouver last year and immediately the company was flooded with requests for a tour. And so, in January and February they will visit 21 different communities to share their compelling story with audiences across B.C. and Alberta.
The performance in Gitanmaax Feb. 1 at Gitanmaax Hall has been moved to Hazelton Secondary School.
‘Sacred Ground’ ancient burial story goes to Philadelphia
We’re used to hearing about the creative element within our community and how it does such a wonderful job taking the arts from here to the bigger world. We keep finding new and exciting examples in the most unexpected areas.
Crossroads Cultural Management (CRM) was recently selected to have it’s film Sacred Ground chosen for exhibition at this year’s Society for Applied Anthropology Film Festival in Philadelphia this April.

Heart & Soul Lip Sync Battle
The Heart & Soul Lip Sync Battle was a show for the ages last Saturday night in Smithers. Proceeds from the show at the Dze L K’ant Friendship Centre went to the BC Children’s Hospital, Children’s Heart Network and Bulkley Valley Child Development Centre.

Brewing success with grand opening
Pretty phenomenal. Great praise from customer number one at the grand opening of the new Bulkley Valley Brewery in Smithers last Saturday. Dana Grant said it was the first time to first to try the beers on offer and was glad to have the chance to try some of the different brews.

Smithers’ mountains to star in another movie
Another movie is being filmed in Smithers. This time, it’s a production from China. About 70 people were working on it, with about 50 workers coming from out of town and about 20 were local hires. They spent most of their time filming on the backside of Hudson Bay Mountain. The Chinese production is called Wings over Everest and is about a climber on a recovery mission who discovers her team is at risk by murderous arms dealers.

SSS students celebrate Pride
Smithers Secondary School managed to add a splash of colour to the grey, overcast morning of May 25 when they held their second annual Pride Day celebration. Though a town-wide event celebrating the local LGBTQ community was set to take place the next day, this was a special occaision for high school students.

Craft beer drinkers rejoice: another brewery is coming to town
Cameron James knew for a long time he wanted to one day own a brewery, but he wasn’t sure if he wanted to quit his job as a high school teacher and brewer in Prince Rupert to open a brewery in Smithers with Blaine Estby and Adin Bennett. The three men met for lunch in Terrace in early 2016 to formally discuss a proposal. “It took me about 45 seconds to be like I would be stupid not to,” said James.
Gone Hollywood gone
After 10 years, the last video rental store in Smithers will be shutting its doors for good.
