If you ever wanted to get a sneak peek of new ballet production before its premiere, you’re in luck.
The ballet, called @giselle, is set to open at the Vancouver Playhouse on Sept. 5 and it will be at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre over the Labour Day weekend where the public is welcome to come and watch at no charge as they put the finishing touches on this world-class production.
It is put on by MOVETHECOMPANY, an international contemporary ballet company.
A bracing new vision of the classic tale, @giselle is set in a world that looks a lot like yours. A technology-infused re-imagining of the iconic ballet masterwork Giselle that examines the ways social media has leveraged an unexpected change on the nature of modern love and relationships.
Vancouver’s own award-winning Joshua Beamish brings his innovative choreographic vision to the Chilliwack Cultural Centre, featuring an all-star lineup of some of North America’s finest ballet artists from American Ballet Theatre, The National Ballet of Canada, and Pennsylvania Ballet. Beamish is a British Columbia phenomena and has brought two of his works to Chilliwack in the past.
This undeniably modern take on a beloved classic will explore our understandings of love, sex, and relationships in a world of dating apps, Snapchat stories, and Instagram. Using motion-captured digital projections and bold visual effects, this is Giselle re-imagined as you’ve never seen her before.
The show will integrate a high level of technology into the rehearsed choreography; then it will move to the Vancouver Playhouse for its official world premiere with the expectations that it will tour for years to come.
