Victoria-based band CURL will ring in 2015 twice this year, first at a New Year’s Eve event at the Sooke Legion, then again mid-day on Jan. 1 at Hermann’s Jazz Club.
“CURL is going to start the new year off with some really fun dinner and dance events,” said band leader, Helen Davies. “The Sooke Legion show will be a classic New Year’s Eve party, with a chicken cordon bleu dinner at 7 p.m. and a rendition of Auld Lang Syne sung at midnight. On January 1 at Hermann’s, we’ll sing that song again, but this time the music will start at 2:00 p.m. with a 4:30 break for a buffet-style dinner.”
CURL provides danceable, energetic blues-based music, both original and borrowed from the classics, with vocalist Davies singing in a voice reminiscent of Janis Joplin and Etta James.
CURL has one CD, All My Fault, which features a mix of old-school blues and original songs. The CD has received positive reviews from fans and media alike, gaining wide airplay on several media outlets including CFUV Victoria; Kamloops’ Blues Underground Network; and Vancouver’s Big Groove Radio Show, among others.
“We’re really proud of our CD and hope to do more recording in the new year,” Davies said.
In 2014, CURL played Butchart Gardens, the Dragonboat Festival and the Nanaimo Summertime in the Park Blues event. In 2013 CURL played the Victoria Blues Bash and was profiled on CHEK TV. They also performed live on CFUV radio.
CURL is Helen Davies on vocals and guitar, Dee Cooper on keyboard, Susan Johnson on bass and Christa Rossner on drums.
