Parksville’s ElderCollege is running a Saturday Speaker Series on how to ensure the health care system serves people best as they age.

Called Taking Control of Your Health and Wellness, the series runs for seven Saturdays, beginning this weekend, January 29.

Guest lecturers will talk about various aspects of how to get the best for your personal health.

The series is organized by ElderCollege, a volunteer-run program in the Centre for Continuing Studies of Vancouver Island University.

First, Parksville resident and gerontologist Denyse Morrow will start with a celebration of the current generation of “amazing elders,” in a talk called, Survivors, Strivers, Thrivers.

On February 5 Dr. Gloria Gutman of Simon Fraser University, a member of The World Health Organization’s Expert Advisory Panel on Aging and Health, will talk about emergency preparedness amongst seniors, the most vulnerable group in any disaster.

Following sessions are, Health and Exercise as One Grows Older, by David Docherty, Professor Emeritus from the University of Victoria (Feb. 12), Bioidentical Hormone Replacement — Hype or Hope? by Dr. Andrew Biro, Longevity Wellness and Aesthetics, Qualicum Beach (Feb. 19), and From Prevention to Care — A Whole Person Approach to Cancer, by Dr Julius Halashchek-Weiner, of the InspireHealth integrated cancer care centre in Vancouver (Feb. 26).

March 5 Lynne MacFadgen of Vancouver Island University shares strategies for finding and using health information, and on March 12 Jessie Mantle, former professor of nursing at the University of Victoria, talks about the importance of maintaining one’s personal health record.

The lectures are in Room 125, Building 250 at the Nanaimo campus. For ElderCollege members the seven-session series is $38 plus HST. Non-members may register for $53.

The sessions start at 10.30 a.m. and ticket holders are requested to arrive before 10:20.

Unoccupied seats will then be available for $10.
