Take a journey around the world and back in time with the Fort Gallery this fall.
From Oct. 11 to 29, the gallery will host Journeys — Time/Space by artists Don Portelance and Alex Burton.
The exhibit focuses on two different travel experiences, with Portelance relaying his personal travels through many different countries, and Burton exploring the travel of childhood.

“I have created images inspired by many countries using various approaches; painting on site, working from photos, or abstracting the scene — whatever best shows the essence of the place,” said Portelance, a longtime artist and Fort Gallery member. “Often abstracted elements are incorporated into a piece to explore symbolic or environmental concerns, or to isolate facets of the subject.”
Burton’s presentation will feature oil paintings.
“I am intrigued by symbols and drawings which seem to be universal,” he said. “These symbols have shown up since the beginning of recorded time and can always be seen in children’s art from all over the globe. These paintings are whimsical, colourful, and adventurous attempts at recreating the joy the symbols embody.”
An opening reception for the show will take place on Sunday, Oct. 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Fort Gallery, 9048 Glover Rd.
The gallery’s regular hours are Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
