The Victoria Concert Orchestra hopes to entice an Oak Bay audience with a little baroque.
“The Victoria Chamber Orchestra does a baroque concert every couple of years,” said Don Kissinger, public relations for VCO.
“We are performing in Oak Bay and in the daylight hours to try to draw an audience that may not like going out in the evening or trying to park in Victoria.”
The orchestra starts with a trio of concerts at First Metropolitan in Victoria, then shifts out of town to the smaller venue and an afternoon performance in Oak Bay.
Several highlights Kissinger looks forward to are the Vivaldi Concerto for 4 Violins – featuring Yasuko Eastman, Anja Rebstock, Susan Colonval and Sue Martin and cellist Mary Smith – and Josh Layne performing Handel’s Harp Concerto.
Other works on the program include Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #4, featuring Lanny Pollet and Mary Jill McCullough on flutes and Hollas Longton as solo violin, and Bach Orchestral Suite #1. They’ll also perform Corelli’s Concerto Grosso Op.6, #10 with Longton and Yasuko Eastman on violins and Smith’s solo cello.
The 21-year-old orchestra is conducted by Yariv Aloni who has led the group through two decades of growth and development.
Under his direction the Victoria Chamber Orchestra has found itself among the finest string ensembles in Canada.
“He is known for his wonderful choice of programs,” Kissinger said. “This concert of baroque lolly-pops is a rare event and very easy listening for anyone wanting to give the classical music scene a tryout.”
The Victoria Chamber Orchestra performs Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 1701 Elgin Street.
