Kicking Horse Culture with assistance from Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA) will bring Vancouver’s popular artist consultant Pennylane Shen to Golden for a weekend of workshops on how to make it as an artist.
The workshops are being offered on April 13 and 14 in Golden. Funding through CKCA is allowing for a reduced rate with the intention of making this educational experience available to even the “starving artists” of the region.
Shen has been teaching artists the essentials of building an art career for over a decade and understands the inner workings of the gallery world. Her seminars are designed specifically for emerging artists preparing to approach the commercial and public art industry. Topics include how to prepare exhibition proposals, writing artist statements, commercial gallery procedures and guidelines, promotional development (publications, websites, social media, etc), and standard practices for pricing, hanging, documenting and reproducing work.
Registrants will have the opportunity to request a critique from Shen as well. Of the artists who express interest in participating, six will be selected to be part of a group critique. These artists will bring a small selection of their work and Shen will direct the group through a series of three set questions whereby each person answers individually. Shen will address each person individually regarding their body of work, although this content is open to all workshop attendees. A question and answer session will follow.
Many artists understand the importance of investing time and money into perfecting their craft, but it is also worthwhile to pursue professional development. In rural parts of the province, opportunities to learn about the nuts and bolts of a career in the arts are less frequent. This is a chance to learn from the same person teaching urban counterparts.
