An award-winning gospel group, founded by the same woman who discovered the Canadian Tenors, performs in Nanaimo May 6.
Tenore consists of three vibrant and superior tenor voices – Shane Wiebe, Jason Catron and Mark David Williams.
The trio, which performed on national television on 100 Huntley Street and Crystal Cathedral, released an album of their own renditions of gospel favourites, such as How Great Art Thou, You’ll Never Walk Alone and The Lord’s Prayer.
The album also includes Sempre Vicino; A Child’s Prayer for Peace, the multiple award-winning Tipperary Peace Convention’s International Song of Peace, written by Jill Ann Siemens, the group’s founder.
The group picked up three awards from the Covenant Awards, including Traditional/Classical Album of the Year. The trio also won the Blessings Fan Choice Award, voted by fans across the country, despite being merely a write-in option on the ballot.
The concert is described as a musical event, showcasing talent from a pool of well-known and up and coming artists, coupled with audience participation, singing tunes they know and love, creating a moving experience of thousands of voices singing together.
“I have always envisioned a project where people would join in on singing choruses together,” said Siemens. “It doesn’t matter if you have a crowd of 5,000 young people thundering We Will Rock You or a 5,000-strong congregation singing How Great Thou Art, there is something therapeutic, powerful and indescribable in thousands of voices joining together.”
Wiebe, a former top-five contestant on Canadian Idol, believes the song choices are what endear audiences to Tenore.
“What’s interesting about our music is that the melody is always very familiar, allowing audiences to sing along,” he said. “Tenore takes these familiar songs and infuses an adrenaline rush.”
The concert is set for First Baptist Church, beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets $20 from the church office.
