The Vancouver Island Symphony (VIS) is presenting WAVE at the Port Theatre on Saturday, March 17 and the concert of Handel’s Water Music will also have a spectacular visual presentation.

Handel’s masterpiece will be under the baton of conductor Pierre Simard. The guest artist is Canadian-born violinist and principal concertmaster with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Martin Chalifour who will perform Violin Concerto No. 4, composed by Mozart in 1775.

The program of brilliant musicianship is sure to have every note exactly where it should be and will be performed with a backdrop of stunning photography.

To accompany the VIS performance during the concert Nanaimo photographer Dirk Heydemann, of Heydemann Art of Photography, is presenting a stunning visual backdrop of original and historical images about water and how it affects the lives of those who live on the Island.

“When Pierre Simard approached me and asked if I could provide pictures I was thrilled” said Heydemann, who has been the official photographer and a sponsor for the VIS.

“Part of me wanted an artistic flare to the presentation. I thought of how water affects our everyday lives. I also looked at the option that Nanaimo’s logo and symbol is that of a wave. Then I thought about a-day-in-the-life-of series of pictures. Then I realized it wasn’t just about the photos but about needing to harmonize with the music”

He said there will be about 150 images in the slide show and he will coordinate them with the music as best he can.

The concert at the Port Theatre is on March 17 at 7:30 p.m. For tickets call 250-754-8550 or visit www.porttheatre.com.
