Events, courses and clubs listing for North Delta

THIS WEEK

• Tour de Delta: July 7-9; various locations; Tour de Delta promises three amazing days of competitive cycling action and fun festivals. Kick off the weekend the evening of Friday, July 7 with the MK Delta Criterium in the Social Heart area of North Delta. Come early and enjoy the North Delta Criterium Festival, a celebration of North Delta sport, recreation and culture will feature an opportunity to try a variety of sports and experience Delta. Festival runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Richardson Elementary (11339 83 Ave.) and will include children’s crafts, food vendors, face painting, mascots and a North Delta sports showcase. The tour continues on Saturday, July 8 with the Ladner Criterium in historical Ladner Village, and wraps up on Sunday, July 9 with the White Spot Delta Road Race. The Tour de Delta is a family-oriented event with fun and entertainment for the entire family.

• Déjà Vu Vintage Market: July 8, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wellbrook Winery, 4626 88th St., Ladner; Another fun day of vintage shopping at Wellbrook Winery. There’ll be amazing treasures to be found with over 40 super talented vintage vendors. Brad Hadley will be returning to serenade you while you shop, and the food trucks will be there with their tasty treats. Don’t forget the wine tasting! Selfie stations will be available so you can snap a pic and remember the fun you had at Déjà Vu Vintage Market! Admission costs $5 at event, or $4 online. • Positively Canadian: July 8, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Learn interesting or quirky facts, stats and tips about Canada’s history, geography, people, culture and more in this fun and informative celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday with Heather Pattullo, author of Positively Canadian: A Fun Guide to Canadian Language, Culture and History.

• Andrew Dalziel: July 14, 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.; George Mackie Library; Magic happens at the library! Join magician Andrew Dalziel and his assistant Rocky the Raccoon for a magical walk on the wild side that’s fun for the whole family. Tickets are required and are available for free at the library for pick up in person starting July 7.

• Paws 4 Stories: July 15, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Paws 4 Stories is a St. John’s Ambulance therapy dog community service that promotes improvement in children’s reading skills. When a child reads with a dog, they start to relax and forget about feeling nervous about reading. (Dogs make very supportive listeners.) Therapy dogs and their volunteers will listen to children who want to practice reading aloud. This is a free program for ages 6 and up. Space is limited. so please register by phone or in person after 10 a.m. on the day of the program for your 15-minute reading session.

• Poetry Night in Punjabi: July 18, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Come hear two published poets/authors read and discuss their work and answer questions from the audience. This evening is offered in collaboration with Kendri Punjabi Lekhak Sabha, Uttari Amrika and Punjabi Lekhak Manch – Vancouver.

• Walk on the Wild Side with Elspeth: July 21, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; George Mackie Library; Wild and crazy! Wild and hilarious! Wild and woolly! Wild and free! Come and experience master puppeteer and storyteller Elspeth Bowers as she takes us on a Summer Reading Club walk on the wild side with stories, songs and a puppet show.

• Boundary Bay Airshow: July 22, 12 p.m.; Boundary Bay Airport; Airshows are full of raw energy and excitement, and they always draw a crowd. As one of Delta’s most popular events, the Boundary Bay Airshow is no exception. Come enjoy exciting aerobatic performances and static displays, food vendors and community booths, and the Port of Vancouver Family Zone. • Jog for the Bog: July 23, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Delta Nature Reserve; Come for the run and stay for the fun. Jog through the bog in the morning, enjoy a pancake breakfast, then stay for music, dancing and booths. Registration opens at 8 a.m., jog and festivities start at 9:30 a.m. All-ages. • Urban Safari: July 28, 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Creeping, crawling, leaping, flying – Urban Safari’s rescued wild animals move in all kinds of ways. Come meet some animals and hear their stories. Learn how to protect and care for animals in the wild. • Mad Science: Aug. 4, 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.; George Mackie Library; Up, up and away! Join the Mad Scientists and investigate the power of air with hot air balloons, vortex generators and even a hovercraft. Be amazed as you discover some of the wild and wonderful behaviours of air. • Delta Scottsdale Lions Club: Second and fourth Tuesday of each month; The Lions Club is a service club that welcomes both ladies and men. • Recovery International Weekly Meetings: Tuesdays, 7 p.m.; North Delta Evangelical Free Church, 11300 84th Ave.; Recovery International is a weekly community-based self-help mental health group that offers tools and techniques that participants can use to deal with depression, anxiety, impulse control, anger management and a variety of other nervous and mental heath issues. The self-help systems used were developed by the late neuro-psychiatrist Abraham A. Low M.D. and have been helping people for over 70 years. Meetings are led by trained group leaders.

• Canadian Federation of University Women, North Delta/Surrey: CFUW is a national non-partisan, voluntary, self-funded organization working to improve the status of women and to promote human rights, public education, social justice and peace. Every year, CFUW and its clubs award close to $1 million to women to help them pursue post-secondary studies and also provide funding for library and creative arts awards. CFUW clubs provide learning and fellowship through lecture series, book clubs and issues groups, work to prevent violence against women and child poverty, and promote early learning and child care.
