Young Nanaimo actors are stepping into the Victorian steampunk era during a tale of The Wiz.
Gold and bronze cogs and gears adorn the set, transporting audience members to an Emerald City with a different look.
“It’s a very fun play,” said Chelsea Larson, 13, who plays Dorothy. “It’s not like the classic Wizard of Oz – it’s industrial.”
The play, presented by Headliners Production and Rehearsal Studio, shows at Malaspina Theatre May 28 at 7:30 p.m. and May 29 at 2 p.m.
The cast members said everyone has been working hard to bring the play to life and it has great costumes, songs and musical numbers.
“We hope it shows through in the production,” said Larson about performing the play in front of an audience.
Meaghan Soloway, 16, who plays the Scarecrow, said the steampunk theme takes the production in a different direction than the original version of The Wiz.
“We’ve got some fun moments in there,” said Dreece Beaudoin, who plays the Tin Man.
It’s Beaudoin’s first acting experience with Headliners, but he said it’s been “tons of fun.”
Headliners is also presenting Shrek on May 27 at 7:30 p.m. and May 28 at 2 p.m. Tickets for either production are $10 each, available in advance from West Coast Resale and The Buzz Coffee House or $12 at the door.
