The Township of Langley Summer Concert Series at the Willoughby Community Park Amphitheatre continues Thursday, July 20 at 7 p.m. with a performance by Her Brothers, an alternative rock band from Aldergrove.
The public is encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to the new outdoor venue in the 7700 Block of 202A Street and enjoy an evening of free musical entertainment.
Her Brothers, a group made up of siblings Gabe, Levi, and Josh Penner, along with their dad Jonathan Penner, have performed together since 2008.
In 2015, Her Brothers released their debut album of original songs entitled “SHE,” with the goal of bringing the plight of women in southeast Asia to the attention of audiences and fans back home. Gabe had travelled with a film crew to the region in 2013 and witnessed firsthand situations where women were being abused, victimized, dehumanized, and living under extreme conditions. Such disturbing examples caused Gabe to repeatedly wonder, “What if this was my little sister?” It became the inspiration for the album and the focus of the band.
In April 2015, Her Brothers became the only band to ever win the annual Langley Has Talent competition. Since that time, the group has gone on to perform at festivals and celebrations throughout the Lower Mainland, including Canada Day in Willoughby, White Rock, and Abbotsford, and at the beer, food, and Cranberry Festivals in Fort Langley.
Her Brothers have also organized or been a part of several fundraisers, including benefits for Fort McMurray and Rwanda, and the Surrey Firefighters Charitable Society.
The band’s July 20 performance at the Willoughby Community Park Amphitheatre is part of the Township’s Canada150 Celebrations. The Concert Series, sponsored by Long & McQuade Music and the Langley Times, will see free entertainment take place at the Amphitheatre every Thursday at 7 p.m. throughout July and August.
As well, the Township invites residents to be part of its Community of Communities Photo Mosaic Mural project. A “selfie” photo booth will be set up in the park during the concert to snap photographs that will be incorporated into a legacy mural.
