Island Soul Choir members are raising their voices in celebration of Father’s Day during their concert, Reflections.
The concert is Sunday (June 19) at 2:30 p.m. at the Port Theatre and features more than 130 choir members and a special performance by Novel Voz, a septet that hails from Havana, Cuba.
Island Soul previously performed with Novel Voz during its visit to Cuba in 2013.
Penny Mitchell, Island Soul Choir president, said many of the Cuban singers’ job was performing in the choirs. She said Island Soul made an impression on the singers during their visit.
“Because we sang from out hearts there was just pure joy coming from us,” she said. “In singing there is such an enthusiasm around the singers.”
Members of Island Soul don’t use sheet music during concerts. Mitchell said sheet music acts as a barrier and without it the choir members are able to connect more with audience members.
“We are not a typical choir that just sits there onstage and sings. We move and groove and move to the beat,” said Mitchell. “We are singing a lot of our favourite songs – the Top 10 favourite of all time.”
Tickets for Island Soul Choir’s Reflections are $22.50, children 12 years old and younger are $5. Tickets are available in advance by calling 250-754-8550 or online at www.porttheatre.com.
