Island Soul Choir members aim to bring joy into people’s lives with song.
The choir’s upcoming concert, called Joy, is Sunday (Nov. 20) at 1 p.m. at the Port Theatre.
The choir, about 140 members, sings under the direction of Karla Mundy. The concert also features special guest performers Mama’s Kitchen.
The concert’s repertoire was inspired by the choir’s recent performances in New Orleans.
Songs audience members can expect to hear include Iko Iko, Lua Soberana, Good News and Ready for Joy.
Mama’s Kitchen, which consists of Cyndi Doell, Joan Wallace and Shirley Whitelaw, will perform a mix of folk, blues, swing, gospel and vintage pop.
NanGo Grannies has partnered with Island Soul Choir during the concert. The NanGo Grannies are selling baked goods in the theatre’s lobby prior to the concert and during intermission to raise money for the Stephen Lewis Foundation, which helps grandmothers in Africa held raise their grandchildren who have been orphaned due to AIDS.
Tickets are $22.50 or $5 for eyeGo and children 12 years and under are free. Tickets are available in advance by calling 250-754-8550 or www.porttheatre.com.
