‘It’s a Small World,’ visits Hope gallery

Art exhibition displaying the watercolour and acrylic paintings of Esther Davies

Esther Davies came back from a trip to Italy, France, England, Wales and Ireland last September, inspired by what she saw. She has been painting scenes from her travels ever since in preparation for the July Backroom Show in the Hope Arts Gallery.

“It’s a Small World” will display landscapes with some portraits done in watercolour and acrylic.

Esther has attended workshops, locally and in the U.S. She is determinedly self-taught. Artists at Work, which meets every Friday at the Baptist Church hall from 11- 3 pm, (contact S. Blythe @ 604-869-5925) is her local group who do their own thing and invite critiques from other attendees.

Esther has been painting more intensely in the last ten years, inspirations coming from photographs of friends’ travels and hikes.

Prior to that she worked as a care aide in Extended Care. She is busy with her close and extended family. Having come to Hope at the age of three in the year of the flood (1948) and lived on the site of the current Dairy Queen, she can offer just a few bits of history from this town!

Another facet to this artist- check out the Cat’s Meow for Hippity and Flopsy, books for boys and girls.

Esther says “everywhere I look, there is more to paint and I have no idea how I can paint fast enough. But I’m having a good time trying.”

Meet the artist at the Hope Arts Gallery, 349 Fort St., for the exhibit opening reception Friday, July 6 from 2 till 4 p.m.

The exhibit runs June 29 to July 28 at the Hope Arts Gallery and is open Tues.- Sun., from 10 am to 4 pm. The gallery is operated by the Hope and District Arts Council and run by volunteers.
