Tomie Seo, a visual artist from Japan, is presenting a pop-up art show and reception at the Caetani Cultural Centre’s Studio Gallery.
As part of her exhibition, she’s inviting people to come and take part in her free Community Utopian Drawing Project, which is an invitation to enjoy drawing and using art as a communication tool, to express feelings and identities.
Bring a sense of playful fun, curiosity and a friend or two!
The Exhibition Opening Reception takes place Friday, Jan. 18, 7-9 p.m alongside the Community Utopian Drawing Project. You can also check out Seo’s work Saturday, Jan. 19, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Caetani Cultural Centre Studio Gallery.
Seo also offers a Photo-Realistic Drawing Workshop Jan. 26 at the Gallery from 1-4 p.m. The workshop will teach students the basics of drawing from their favourite pictures with pencil. Register online ($65) at caetani.org or call the Caetani Centre at 250-275-1525.

Seo’s work depicts the hidden political and social structures of the world by focusing on racism, gender and identity – those who are repressed and victimized.
She believes that the phenomena of this world is intertwined and related – like light and shadow, cause and effect – and often juxtaposes opposite images through photo-realistic drawing, painting, video and sculpture with electronics to create interactive installations which represent a diorama or map of a whole structure or system.
She obtained a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art.
The Self-Directed Artist-in-Residence program is available to artists working on creative projects anywhere from two weeks to three months in length. The program is intended to serve as a conduit between regional and national artistic cultures by welcoming artists of any genre from across Canada to the North Okanagan to live, create and commune. The artist stays at the Caetani Cultural Centre and is invited to share workshops, readings and exhibitions with the North Okanagan community.
