The Sand Dollars square dancing club is kicking off the new year with an open house on Jan. 3 and everybody is invited.
“We just want people to come and see what we’re all about,” said Debbie Schmidt, caller and cuer of the club.
Schmidt is a major advocate of square dancing saying one night on the dance floor is equivalent to seven kilometers of walking.
“It’s also just a lot of fun,” said Schmidt. “You get to travel up and down the Island going to different dances meeting different people.”
The Sand Dollars square dancing club is based in Parksville but invites people from all around the area to join.
“We have a smaller sized club with around 30 members,” said Schmidt, adding that they are always welcoming new members. “Square dancing is a great activity for people of all ages.”
Dances, practices and the open house are hosted at the Bradley Centre on Shearme Road in Coombs.
Costumes are optional and the club encourages everyone to stay casual, if they want.
The open house is on Jan. 3 from 7 – 8:30p.m. After that, the Sand Dollars are offering two free introductory classes on Jan. 6 and Jan. 13 starting at 7 p.m.
