The Portal Players Dramatic Society music program offers singers and “would love to be” singers the opportunity to be a part of a musical community.
It’s never been more popular to sing in a choir, says Portal Players musical director Janet Schlackl. Choirs are springing up in communities everywhere and the choral landscape is unrecognizeable compared to the choirs of old.
This “golden age” of community choirs, as Schlackl calls it, marks a big change in attitude. Community choirs aren’t about musical excellence. They’re about community, enjoyment and the “buzz” that comes from making music together. Choirs can also deliver real health benefits in helping people to relax, focus and shake off the stresses of everyday life.
Fun-filled Thursday afternoons at the Capitol Theatre are open for Wee Glee (ages 6-9) and Glee (ages 10-17) singers. A non-audition program is open to any child in the community, running from September to June, and includes two shows per year.
Sea Notes, the adult chorus, meets every second Thursday evening to make music and laughter. This non-audition choir learns repertoire that ranges from traditional to pop to jazz. Anyone interested in singing for fun and relaxation is invited to join.
Spaces are open in all choirs for new members. Registration will take place at the Capitol Theatre (4905 Argyle Street) on Thursday, Aug. 30 between 3-6 p.m.
