Multi-juno award winner Bill Bourne will be traveling from Edmonton to play his legendary folk, roots and blues music at the Errington Hall this Friday.
Bourne said although he started playing instruments when he was 11, he has always felt a strong connection to music, and must have felt the musical vibrations from his mother’s music in the womb.
Influences in his music today have come from traditions around the world, like the Celtic sounds that came from his parents band, his time playing with Madagascar Slim, and from studying flamenco guitar for the last decade. Bourne said it’s interesting to see the parallels between many of these music genres.
“I think there are basic elements in almost every musical tradition that have survived over time and those elements survive because they are very potent and very strong,” he said. “I love to discover those elements.”
Bourne has collaborated with many artists over the years, like Eivør Pálsdóttir from the Faroe Islands and Wyckham Porteous and Jas Ohlhauser in the Bop Ensemble, and he has released more than a dozen albums.
Music is a healing energy, Bourne said, and at his solo concerts he will often let the music guide him.
“If you can just be open to the music and try not to think about it or impose a preconceived idea on the song often it will do amazing things that you never thought of, you never dreamed of. And that’s a beautiful thing, that’s the part of music that’s really alive.”
Catch Bourne at the Errington Hall at 8 p.m. this Fri., April 1. Tickets are $20, $10 for under 12 and free for under 5. Buy tickets at the Errington Store, Cranky Dog Music in Parksville or Heaven on Earth in Qualicum Beach.
