The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art welcomes Geotrope, a multidisciplinary exhibition by Ella Morton.
Using a device known as zoetrope – a spinning cylinder that illustrates motion in a series of images – Morton has created a kinetic installation involving images of Canadian and American landscape. The photos are on semi-transparent 4×5 inch film, so that when the zoetrope spins, the images blend together in animation. Through movement and imagery, Geotrope explores how we relate to time and place, and how we confront mystery and the unknown.
Extending into public space will be the installation Roadside Majestic: Celebrating the (Un)Charm of North America, which explores the culture of highway travel. This interactive artwork will be a large and vaguely drawn map of North America with humorous landmarks written all over it.
Participants are invited to write comments on provided markers and place them on the map. The Alternator encourages anyone and everyone to take part in this process. Photo contributions can also be made on the Roadside Majestic blog, which will accompany the installation and can be found at http://roadsidemajestic.blogspot.ca.
Ella Morton was born and raised in Vancouver. She earned a BFA in photography at Parsons The New School for Design (New York, NY) in 2008, and is currently pursuing her MFA in visual art at York University (Toronto).
Morton has attended residencies at The Banff Centre, Nes Artist Residency (Skagaströnd, Iceland) and Full Tilt Creative Centre (McIvers, NL). She has exhibited her work internationally, including solo shows at Viewpoint Gallery (Halifax), Photo Center Northwest (Seattle), and Ross Creek Centre for the Arts (Canning, NS). She has also created public art installations for The Crying Room Projects (Vancouver) and Nocturne: Art at Night (Halifax).

The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art is an artist-run centre located in Kelowna at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, 421 Cawston Ave. The Alternator is a registered non-profit charitable organization dedicated to the development of the creative community. Since 1989, the Alternator has shown the work of emerging Canadian artists, focused on innovative and non-traditional mediums engaged in social and cultural issues.
