If you happened by Whitewater Ski Resort’s Winter Carnival on Saturday afternoon, you would’ve gotten the chance to experience a hyper-raucous concert by the new five-piece Kootenay supergroup The Devils You Don’t.

“It’s hard to quit drinking when you can’t pay the rent,” lead singer Brian Kalbfleisch sang, while soggy skiers foot-tapped along. That particular song was his own composition, but each member contributed their own pieces and took turns on vocals, swapping instruments.

Kalbfleisch was joined onstage by Craig Korth, Rob Fahie, Clinton Swanson and Graham Tracy. They played bluegrass, rock, country and swing tunes.

Every member of the band is a familiar face in Nelson, each of them performing in multiple acts, while Fahie is also the owner of Little Miss Gelato. Korth was playing on a custom instrument he built in his Nelson workshop.

The concert was set up by Paul Hinrichs of On the Road Management.

“Paul’s our go-to man, he knows the Nelson music scene like nobody else and he’s never let us down,” said Whitewater’s Rebeckah Hornung.

“We’ve had a few of these guys up before, and they always know how to get the kiddies dancing. This is a community event and having these local legends up here is a huge part of it.”
