Langley high school students take to the stage for original plays and music

D.W. Poppy Secondary has student plays and a holiday concert.

Tickets are still available for Espressivo, the fundraising concert by the D.W. Poppy Secondary music department. People can make an evening out of the event Wednesday, Dec. 5

The doors open at 5 p.m. for the show that features more than 200 student performers in five concert bands, two concert choirs, two jazz bands, and a jazz choir. Tickets are $12 for the show. The school is at 23752 52nd Ave.

“Espressivo regularly sells out. We still have a few tickets available for purchase online,” said teacher Mark Follett.

Proceeds from the event help the high school subsidize costs to participate in festivals and competitions, put on concerts in the community to connect its students outside the school, bring in guest artists to work with Poppy’s young musicians, and provide instruments and partial tour funding to students in need who would otherwise be unable to participate.

The music starts at 6:30 p.m. But before the music comes the meal. Food trucks, including Big Reds Poutine, Wings, and Helms Mobile Kitchen, are on site 5 to 7 p.m. for those who want to buy dinner.

The evening also features a balloon pop, raffle and silent auction. Given the timing, the repertoire will be based on the holidays.
