The Selkirk Pro-Musica Concert Series season continues with an evening of Brazilian jazz performed by vocalist Laura Landsberg and her quartet of local musicians. Laura will be joined by Don Clark, trumpet, Paul Landsberg, guitar, Rob Fahie, bass and Steven Parish, drums.
The group will perform a variety of Brazilian jazz standards along with original arrangements of traditional and contemporary music.
Landsberg will be performing in both English and Portuguese with songs by Jobim and other Brazilian composers such as Edu Lobo and Jorge Ben Jor. The group will also present Brazilian-influenced interpretations of songs originally made famous by North American artists such as John Coltrane and Stevie Wonder.
The concert will take place at the Shambhala Music and Performance Hall at 7:30 p.m. on January 28.
Laura Landsberg fell in love with Brazilian music at a young age when she discovered the now-classic album Getz/Gilberto. Its subtle mixture of jazz with the sounds of bossa nova and samba immediately caught her ear and fueled a passion for Brazilian music that has lasted throughout her career. She regularly performs Antonio Carlos Jobim standards along with works by contemporary Brazilian artists such as Milton Nascimento, Sergio Mendes and Elis Regina. Her interest in this style of music culminated in her joining the Spokane-based, nine-piece Brazilian band Desafinado, performing at various music festivals along with her husband, Paul, on guitar.
Tickets are $15 and available at Otter Books and at the door.
