There will be plenty of Loving Hugging Kissing at the Shady Rest Pub this Saturday night as Lazy Mike and the Rockin’ Recliners throw a CD release party.
The new album, called Rollin’ Through this World, includes 10 songs, half of which are originals and half that are covers, including one by Canadian band Powder Blues called Loving Hugging Kissing.
Lazy Mike and the Rockin’ Recliners formed in 2007 and are known as a harp- driven blues band. The group is lead by vocalist and harmonica player Mike Mallon, who played with the popular rock ‘n roll cover group The Maloomba Boogie Band for 22 years. Bob Berry sings and plays bass with the group, Mark Comerford plays guitar and sings, and Ryan Connell plays the drums.
The band’s new album is the third one they have produced, and includes a Junior Wells song called Messin’ with the Kid and a favourite tune by blues legend Duke Robillard.
Mallon said he’s always writing music, as is the bass player Berry, but the original tunes that made the album were fresh ones, and he’s pleased with the outcome.
“We’re still trying to do the same sort of rocking blues stuff and good time music,” he said, “but I always think when I write songs they are better than the songs I wrote before.”
The music is very danceable, Mallon said, and he’s eager to see how the crowd reacts at The Shady this Saturday night.
“I’ve played for years as a bar band and all kinds of stuff and the way you always know you’re being successful is whether you have everybody dancing,” he said.
The fun begins at 7 p.m. on April 19. The Shady Rest is located at 3109 West Island Hwy in Qualicum Beach.
