Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School opens in Nanaimo with a little burlesque flair.

Dr. Sketchy, founded as an alternative to drawing classes in New York in 2005, provides an opportunity to study life drawing with a twist.

Instead of nude models posed for hours, Dr. Sketchy hosts circus performers and burlesque dancers in all their costumed glory to sketch, draw and paint at will.

The first Dr. Sketchy event in Nanaimo is set for Feb. 12, 6-9 p.m., with Nymh Fete, a dancer with Naughty and Spice Burlesque. The adults-only event is held at the Clubhouse Dance and Fitness Studio on Wingrove Street, across from Departure Bay beach.

Everyone is welcome, from acclaimed artists to hobbyists and doodlers, said hostess Kara Desorcy. Artists bring their pencils and paper, or paint and canvass, and Desorcy provides the snacks, music and creative company.

Entry fee is $8/advance; $10/door. Please call 250-585-8802 or visit www.drsketchynanaimo.com.
