Songs Strings and Steps presents a live-streamed concert on Saturday, June 20 at 7 p.m. featuring the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra (AYO) with conductor Calvin Dyck.

The AYO had planned to leave for a tour of Scotland on June 27, but the trip has been postponed until 2021 due to travel restrictions.

In the virtual concert, the musicians will stand six feet apart, and the concert will be broadcast live on YouTube. The link will be available through the website calvindyck.com.

Some of the highlights of the concert include Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, Debussy’s Claire de Lune arranged for string orchestra, and the visceral Polish Caprice by Grazyna Bacewicz, who survived the Second World War in Warsaw.

The AYO will perform Petite Suite by Norwegian composer Ole Olsen, which features Brooklyn Gerber on the piano. In addition, they will premier a new composition called Wired – the War on Covid by Canadian composer Jason Nett.

Sylvia Friesen has been coaching the AYO on choreography for two pieces: Maple Sugar from a collection performed by the Calgary Fiddlers, and Piazzolla’s Libertango.
