Snapshots, a photographic journey taken by Sooke’s Garth Gilligan, opens on March 3 and runs for the month at Island Furniture and Bazaar in Victoria.Garth and his wife Judy, moved to Sooke several years ago after he retired from a career in school administration. His long standing interests in photography and writing were rekindled here on the West Coast by the natural beauty of the area. The development of digital photography had a major impact on his ability to experiment with the camera in a wider variety of settings. His approach to subjects is eclectic, and encompasses anything that captures his eye or intrigues his interest.Viewing the immediate environment through the camera lens has revealed an enhanced world of detail, of colour and form, light and shadow, that make any outing that much more rewarding. Searching for the “perfect shot” has made him more acutely aware of the subtle changes that light and time of day bring to a scene or subject, and more appreciative of the beauty that surrounds us.Gilligan has been fortunate to be able to meld his love of photography with longboating in Sooke, the Tall Ships Festival and the Classic Wooden Boat Show, as well as other activities in the busy harbours of Victoria and the Island. Complimentary interests in hiking and travel have broadened his range of subjects. This has been particularly true of hiking adventures in France and Italy, as well as road trips and visits to cities that were old when Canada was being discovered.
