One of Prince Edward Island’s most respected musicians will be in the Harbour City next month.
On Monday (March 2), singer-songwriter Lennie Gallant will be performing at SimonHolt, 6582 Applecross Rd., at 8 p.m.
“I am looking forward to it,” Gallant said. “I am an Islander; I love playing on islands.”
Gallant grew up in the small town of North Rustico, P.E.I., where he was exposed to music at an early age.
“My folks were pretty creative when I was a kid,” Gallant said. “They were always putting on little performances for their friends and travelling around to different community halls trying to raise money for some cause.”
Since beginning his music career over two decades ago, Gallant, has earned countless accolades including 16 East Coast Music Awards, three Juno Award nominations and a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for Artist of the Year.
Last year, Gallant released, Live Acoustic at the Carleton. The live album, which was his 10th full-length release, was recorded at The Carleton Music Bar and Grill in Halifax.
Gallant said he wanted to release something that had an authentic sound and was a little less rock-based.
“I wanted to put out an album that was pretty reflective of what I have been doing on stage lately,” Gallant said. “I wanted to put out an album that was reflective of what people were seeing on stage these days, which is more of an acoustic setup.”
Despite all the musical accolades, Gallant’s biggest award came in 2003 when he received the Order of Canada.
The Prince Edward Island native said he was shocked to receive Canada’s highest civilian honour.
“I totally did not feel that I deserved it,” Gallant said. “I felt there were other people around me that deserved it more than I did.”
Gallant performs at SimonHolt on March 2. Tickets are $26 in advance or $30 at the door. Tickets can be purchased Fascinating Rhythm.
