The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is an intriguing name for an intriguing play.
By Simon Stephens, it’s adapted from Mark Haddon’s 2003 best-selling novel. The play has won multiple awards for productions on the London stage and on Broadway and now the Mercury Players are staging it in Duncan over two weeks, starting March 7.
It follows 15-year-old Christopher, who has an extraordinary brain. He is exceptionally intelligent, but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. When he falls under suspicion for killing his neighbour’s dog, he sets out to identify the true culprit, which leads to an earth-shattering discovery and a journey that will change his life forever.
According to publicist Shauna Clinging, the Players will “use every tool at their disposal to make the audience experience what Christopher experiences: choreographed movements of the entire cast, various special lighting effects, projections, surround sound, maybe even some smoke and mirrors. Not only is this a gripping show with wit and drama, but it will also be an audio-visual spectacle unlike any the Mercury Theatre audience has seen before.”
The cast of 10 experienced Cowichan Valley actors have been inspired to give their very best to bring this unusual story to their community, she said.
The play’s first run includes 7:30 p.m. performances from March 7-9 with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, March 10. On the second weekend, you can catch 7:30 p.m. shows from March 14-16 and a matinee on Sunday, March 17 at 2 p.m.
