The aggressiveness of metalcore attracted Shark Infested Daughters’ lead singer Chris Thoresen to the genre.
It was also the genre’s flexibility, which allows him to infuse emotion and a message within the lyrics.
“For me specifically, it has a lot of emotion. It is very powerful,” said Thoresen. “I personally like emotional music, anything that evokes an emotion in me I really like.”
When he was about 11 or 12 years old he heard music by the band Killswitch Engage. It was the album Heartache that really resonated with him.
“That album turned me on my head when I heard it,” he said. “I couldn’t believe something so aggressive could have been so beautiful at the same time.”
Thoresen and his five other band mates release the album These Tides, Our Tombs on Nov. 11 and are touring across Western Canada to promote the album.
Shark Infested Daughters perform songs from the latest album at the Cambie Friday (Nov. 4) at 9 p.m. with Nanaimo’s the Body Politic, Corvus the Crow and Sunnyvale.
These Tides, Our Tombs covers some heavy emotional topics, such as loss, suicide and depression.
“It felt good to get it out. Music is like a therapy for some of us,” said Thoresen.
Regarding the album’s name, ‘These Tides’ symbolizes negativity that surrounds people and ‘Our Tombs’ is how people choose to deal with them.
“We really wanted to have a message. We wanted it to be emotional,” said Thoresen. “We sat down and tried to make really honest music.”
The band also strives to break down barriers between genres, according to the group’s press release.
Thoresen said band members have a “ton of fun” onstage and it’s a really powerful performance.
“We all have a good time and try to make it really energized,” he said.
The band consists of Dustin Wolfe, bass, Erika Leah, synth and vocals, Thoresen, vocals, Dan McCormick, guitar and vocals, Oliver Carter-Wells, guitar and Yannick Mathieu on drums.
