Hear the Music Ministries has announced a new scholarship in support of a student pursuing a career as a worship leader, musician or songwriter.
The Christy Maygard Memorial Scholarship will be available to an Okanagan artist, 15-to-25 years old, on an annual basis, with the first given away at the next Hear the Music Night concert.
“Awarding this scholarship is another way Hear the Music is supporting musicians that have a passion for expressing worship through music,” said Jon Buller, who is the founder of Hear the Music and a Juno award nominated Christian recording artist.
The memorial scholarship was created to honour the memory of Christy Maygard, a young woman from Vernon who lived a full life that included songwriting, singing and playing piano in local bands and in the church ministry.
A board member with Hear the Music Ministries, a non-profit ministry that puts on faith-based concerts, Maygard died of cancer at the age of 26 in late 2010.
“We are so privileged to be able to honour the memory of our friend and board member Christy by creating this incredible scholarship in her name. It is an opportunity for us to continue the mission of Hear the Music with emerging musicians by supporting both the musical and spiritual values that were also part of Christy’s heart and life,
The scholarship includes $500 cash, a $500 gift certificate to the Groove Recording Studio (www.grooverecording.com), and an iPod complete with a library of music.
The winner will also receive an exclusive invitation to perform at next year’s Hear the Music night.
Applications are due Sept. 30 Submissions will be reviewed and three finalists will be chosen and notified. The winner will be announced live on stage by Buller at Hear the Music Night Nov. 13.
