A two-day event billed as “Western Canada’s largest pop-up escape room” is coming to Surrey.
On Feb. 9 and 10, Surrey Civic Plaza and city hall will be transformed into a physical and educational adventure, according to a city release Monday.
“The mission, should you choose to accept it, is to gather a team of friends or family to strategize and solve a series of puzzles and riddles that will pave the way to building a smarter city,” the release says.
It’s all part of the Smart Cities Challenge, a national digital technology competition that involves a joint Surrey-Vancouver bid. It’s among five finalists for the $50-million top prize.
In Surrey, the one-hour “Mission: Possible” escape-room experience is based around the premise of a collision at a high-traffic intersection. “Brain teasers will guide participants through physical and intellectual challenges, including a high-tech research lab and a zone on hazardous behaviours. Three levels of difficulty provide a challenge for any participant, from school-aged children to adults.
“As a bonus,” the city release says, “the experience includes a ride on ELA, the first public Electric Autonomous Shuttle in Canada, on the plaza. This autonomous shuttle uses over 250 sensors to navigate through traffic safely and is already being deployed in many jurisdictions around the world.”
