Summer on Vancouver Island is an awesome time of the year, especially when you add to the mix a beloved tradition that started five years ago — FreshAirCinema’s free outdoor movie nights in parks, parking lots, streets, floating barges and beaches in cities and neighbourhoods right across B.C. Many communities kick off their movie nights in July and right here in Parksville a big event is coming up in Community Park.
“We are very excited to start the CCCU Sunset Cinema Series in a great venue in Parksville where the whole family can enjoy a free movie night,” said Jason Bashnick, FreshAirCinema festival organizer. “These events attract huge crowds every night — people simply love the experience of watching a movie outside.”
FreshAirCinema is Canada’s premiere outdoor movie company, family owned and based in B.C. FreshAirCinema works alongside Cinema4Change, a not-for-profit organization whose mandate is to use the power of film to strengthen communities and improve lives.
“Proceeds from the Parksville event this year will be directed to Success by Six,” added Bashnick. “We believe our event provides them with a great way to raise awareness and important funds to continue the work they do.”
The Coastal Communities Credit Union’s Sunset Cinema series will stop in nine island communities with the Parksville show on Tuesday, July 17 with pre-movie activities starting at approximately 6 p.m. The movie presented at dusk will feature the most recent animated Dr. Seuss environmental story featuring the orange creature that speaks on behalf of the Truffula trees.
“Building on previous year’s success, we are very happy to have partnered with Coastal Community Credit Union to present this series for the fourth year in a row” said Bashnick. “We see such a social atmosphere before the event where friends and family just relax and enjoy each other’s company. At dusk everyone settles in and has a fantastic experience watching a movie outdoors — you can’t beat that.”
FreshAirCinema, utilizes a four-story high inflatable movie screen creating a complete movie theatre experience.
They can turn any park or parking lot into a custom made movie theatre in a matter of hours. They will be presenting close to 400 outdoor movies throughout Canada in 2012 including over 150 in British Columbia. All events are free to the public and begin at dusk.
