Fusing a mix of piano, keyboards and drums, the multi-faceted jazz group Parker Abbott Trio will be stopping at Char’s Landing on Saturday, Oct. 29 as part of their cross-Canada CD release tour.

The Toronto-based group is made up of two pianists, Teri Parker and Simeon Abbott, who have been playing together since 2009. The duo became a trio in 2011 with the addition of drummer Mark Segger.

Beginning their tour in Salmon Arm and around B.C.’s Interior, the Parker Abbott Trio will make their way to Vancouver Island near the end of October, all the while promoting their new CD, Elevation.

“It’s 11 tracks of all original music with piano, keyboards and drums,” Parker said.

“The music has been composed over the last three years. We recorded it in November of last year… and got it out about a month ago.”

Both Parker and Abbott play in additional bands where they draw inspiration for the music they make as the Parker Abbott Trio.

“We’re a jazz group and we have a lot of influence from our pop and rock bands we play in as well,” Parker said.

Compositions in Elevation ebb and flow between acoustic grand piano, organs, synthesizers, various electric pianos, and melodica.

“The focus for [Elevation] is a lot of variety of keyboard textures,” Abbott said.

“There’s a dozen different keyboards on the recording and mark plays drums.”

Abbott said audiences at the band’s live shows can expect a lot of energetic music and improvisation and interaction between the band.

“The songs are similar to the recordings but because we improvise there’s a lot of in-the-moment decision making and a lot of spontaneity,” Abbott said.

The show at Char’s begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door or $10 in advance at Char’s Landing or call 778-421-2427.
