Makayla Chang now has a permanent presence in her neighbourhood.
A crowd of about 50 people, including the family and friends of the murdered Nanaimo teenager, gathered at Harewood Centennial Park on March 17 for the unveiling of a mural in her honour.
Members of Nanaimo youth groups including Generation Q, Support Among Youth and Tsawalk created the art work, called Youth Aloud. An accompanying plaque says the mural “celebrates the resilience and diversity of all youth in Nanaimo.”
Among the speakers at the unveiling were artist Yvonne Vander Kooi, who helped facilitate the project, as well Gen Q co-ordinator Ajay MacLeod, Nanaimo Family Life executive director Deborah Hollins and acting mayor Don Bonner.
