Canadian clarinetist Liam Hockley is a versatile musician, equally at home in the standard classical canon as in new music, jazz and improvisation.
Currently a doctor of musical arts candidate in clarinet performance at the University of British Columbia, his primary research interests relate to issues of performer agency within contemporary esthetics, the technical execution of complex notational systems, and works that feature musical/physical aporia and hyper-extended instrumental techniques.
Hockley’s repertoire encompasses works by major composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, and his advocacy for new repertoire has led him to numerous collaborations with emerging and established composers both at home and abroad.
Recent performances include premieres of new works by Ray Evanoff, Thanos Chrysakis and Joan Arnau Pàmies, as well as the North American premieres of works by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Jürg Frey and Gianluca Ulivelli.
Hockley’s versatility in contemporary genres and commitment to the esthetic has been recognized several times, most recently in July 2015 when he was awarded an interpretation prize at the 16th Stockhausen Concerts and Courses Kürten for his performance of Xi für Klarinette — a version of Xi für ein Melodie-Instrument mit Mikro-Tönen which he developed and premiered in September 2013.
Also a dedicated classical musician, Hockley maintains an active schedule of performances as a freelancer with diverse chamber ensembles, and has performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Island Symphony, Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra and Vancouver New Music. He has appeared as a soloist with the the University of British Columbia’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble , the Victoria Symphony, and the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra.
Hockley holds a master’s degree (M.Mus) from the University of British Columbia, and received his bachelor’s degree (B.Mus) from the University of Victoria, graduating with distinction in clarinet performance. His teachers have included François Houle, Cris Inguanti, Patricia Kostek, Earl Thomas, and Christian Gossart.
