The sounds of India will be on stage Nov. 23 for an evening of classical music at the Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies at the University of the Fraser Valley.

Beginning with a lecture, the event will then follow with a performance from Pandit Manu Kumar Seen on sitar and Ustad Akram Khan on the tabla (hand drums).

Music is one of the India’s oldest traditions, dating back to the Vedas (ancient scripts of the Hindus). The tabla was played as early as the sixth century A.D.

Seen was given the Indian Classical Music Award 2002 by the Virasat Foundation of Canada and has played in numerous festivals in India and Canada.

Learning the Tabla at a young age, Khan has gone on to perform in Japan and the U.S., and has released several CDs.

Show starts at 7 p.m., in room F125 at the Abbotsford UFV campus at 33844 King Rd.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling 604-851-6325 or by email info@virasatfoundation.com.
