Nanaimo residents can support refugees around the world and listen to medieval renaissance and early baroque music during the upcoming fundraiser Music for Hope.
The event is Sunday (Sept. 25) at 2 p.m. at the Hope Lutheran Church, located at 2174 Departure Bay Rd.
Admission is by donation.
Money raised during the event will go to Canadian Lutheran World Relief to help refugees around the world.
It features performances by Vancouver’s Bergamasca and Nanaimo’s Heart’s Ease and Sospiri groups, which includes violas and recorders.
Deborah van der Goes said attendees can expect to hear works from the 13th and 17th centuries, which includes Antonio Vivaldi and Johann Bach.
“We will also have a few modern pieces – we’re going to play Starry Starry Night,” said van der Goes.
The evening also includes poetry readings of both Shakespeare’s work and more contemporary poets. The main poetry reader will be Lorna McLellan.
Van der Goes said the poetry readings give a “depth and focus to the whole event.”
Van der Goes said the relief organization uses the money where it is most needed.
If people want a tax receipt they can request one at the event.
