Nanaimo artists open their doors for Hammond Bay Studio Tour

More than 20 artists from various disciplines will have new work on display

Carla Stein said the Hammond Bay Studio Tour has helped open her work to a wider audience.

Since joining the annual show and sale four years ago, the local painter said she’s had art aficionados from across the Island and Vancouver drop by her home studio to talk art and purchase pieces.

“To have my art seen by people who might otherwise not be aware of it or be able to view it because of where they live has been a really great experience on all sorts of different levels,” she said.

The 2019 edition of the tour takes place on May 25 and 26. The tour will feature work by the group’s 11 permanent members as well as 12 guest members, including paintings, photography, ceramics, woodwork, glasswork, metalwork and textile art.

While the artists are spread out along Hammond Bay Road and its arteries, their work can also be viewed all together at the Hammond Bay Serious Coffee location and at the Nanaimo North Library.

Stein said she’s looking forward to the conversations she’ll share with her visitors. She said it can be a learning experience.

“Lots of people come because they’re collectors, but also a lot of people come because they’re budding artists themselves,” she said. “And so you get to do a little bit of mentoring and get to know people and it’s just an all-around really positive experience.”
