The Nanaimo chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists is presenting its annual Fine Art Show at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre from Nov. 1 to 4.
This year’s show will feature 79 paintings by more than 50 artists from the Nanaimo, Arrowsmith and Victoria chapters of the FCA. There were more than 130 submissions, with the final selections made by three Island-based jurors.
“They look at what will work together as a show without discounting the different kinds of paintings,” said Josée Duffhues, art show chair. “So we will have anything from photorealist to completely abstract.”
Those jurors will name the first, second and third place paintings and hand out cash prizes at the invitation-only opening gala on Nov. 1. The show will be open to the general public from Nov. 2 to 4.
“What we’re trying to do is make the Nanaimo area and all of Vancouver Island aware of the wonderful art available in this area as well as grow their awareness of the artists that live here,” Duffhues said.
On Nov. 3 there will be a silent auction and there will be artists present starting at 7 p.m. Duffhues said attendees will have the opportunity to speak with the painters and gain an insight into their art.
“It’s a chance for people to kind of see what makes you tick. Why do you paint this? Or why do you do that? What does it say to you?” she said.
