A 19-year-old violinist was chosen as winner of the Young Musicians’ Concerto Competition through Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra.
Wellington Secondary School graduate Jessica d’Oliveira studied violin for several years under the direction of Leslie Krull.
D’Oliveira gained experience through the orchestra’s mentoring program, which will help as she auditions for a place in the Vancouver Youth Orchestra next season.
As winner of the concerto competition, d’Oliveira plays a solo during the orchestra’s final concert of the season June Reverie. Orchestra director Karl Rainer accompanies d’Oliveira during Concerto in G for violin and orchestra by Haydn.
Selections by the 20-plus member orchestra include music by Corelli, Mozart and Holst.
The concert is set for Saturday (June 9), 7:30 p.m., at Brechin United Church. Tickets $20; $10/students through the Port Theatre ticket centre or at the door. Please call 250-754-8550.
