Schmooze Productions opened its season with The Father, a play told from the point of view of a person suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
The production comes to a close Saturday (May 13) at Harbour City Theatre, which is located at 25 Victoria Rd. According to Dean Chadwick, artistic producer of Schmooze Productions, The Father is just the beginning of a “great lineup” the theatre company is offering this season.
June 24-25 Schmooze presents Disney’s The Little Mermaid, the Broadway musical.
“We are really thrilled about Disney’s The Little Mermaid … This is the Disney’s classic Little Mermaid show based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale and it is so full of music and it’s vibrant and exciting,” said Chadwick. “It’s kind of amazing just to sit in on rehearsals already. People are going to love this. They will eat it up.”
The Little Mermaid shows at 7 p.m. both days with a matinee at 2 p.m. on June 25. Tickets are $40 and are available by calling 250-754-8550 or by visiting www.porttheatre.com.
Teens have a chance to attend Schmooze’s musical theatre camp July 10-30 and star in Cry Baby, a musical based on the movie that starred Johnny Depp.
“It’s a great fun story about being from the wrong side of the tracks and falling in love with a girl from the right side of the tracks,” said Chadwick. “It’s a little bit naughty. It’s a little bit spicy and it’s a little bit perfect for Schmooze for our teens that will be coming to camp.”
The camp is for ages 13-21 and auditions for roles are done in mid-June. Registration is $375 by going to www.schmoozeproductions.com.
Schmooze’s season ends with Hair: The Tribal Rock Musical. It runs Nov. 2-19.
“The tribe will be back presenting the woes and pathos of the ’60s with some fantastic music and some exciting stuff that people might remember or are perhaps a bit foggy on,” said Chadwick.
Chadwick said he first saw the musical in London and fell in love with it.
“It’s such a great ensemble piece that I think people are going to love it here,” he said.
Schmooze Productions is reaching out to theatre patrons through social media this season. The theatre company has a new game called Theatrical Thrills.
“It’s going to be a challenge of sorts. It’s a dare game and people will be asked to do some theatrical dares and post them on our social media pages for prizes and fun and just to live outside of the box,” he said.
People are also being asked to give a video review after watching a performance, which will be posted on the theatre company’s social media pages.
“Good, bad, indifferent, we can’t wait to hear from you,” said Chadwick.
